Polly wins Gold Glove

Major League Baseball and ESPN decided to turn the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards into a TV show. Not really surprising, since everything is a TV show nowadays (even the MLB and NHL drafts!).
It's probably only surprising that it took until the 55th year of the Gold Glove Awards for it to turn into a TV show.
It got of to a tremendous start, thanks to the genius of ESPN. They slotted the "live" award show for 10 p.m. EST. (A perfect time slot for the kids interested in the game, no?)
And not only at 10 p.m. EST, but after a football game that began at at 7 p.m. And, of course every football game lasts exactly three hours. [rolls eyes]
Thanks to a terrific MAC football game (and by terrific, I mean a game that lacked defense altogether - the IRONY!) and ESPN's not-so-smart scheduling, the first Gold Glove Award, to Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters, was handed out at 10:54 p.m. Only 54 minutes after the program was scheduled to begin. Nice.
OK, enough with a rant about awards that have lost a lot of luster in the last decade anyway, given some of the curious choices. (We're looking at you, Bobby Abreu.... and you too, aging Derek Jeter). ***
As a part of the new, TV show-format, three nominees per position were announced Monday. Three Phillies were nominated: catcher Carlos Ruiz, third baseman Placido Polanco and center fielder Shane Victorino.
The Phils had just one winner.
Polanco made history by winning the Gold Glove in the NL. Polanco is just the second player in baseball history to win the award at two different positions.
Polanco won Gold Gloves as a second baseman with the Detroit Tigers in 2007 and 2009. Polanco and former Angel Darin Erstad are the only two players to win Gold Gloves at two different positions.
Placido Polanco is the first player in baseball history to win Gold Gloves at two different infield positions.
Polanco is the third Phillies player to win a Gold Glove at third base, joining Mike Schmidt (10-time winner), Scott Rolen (four Gold Gloves with Phils). In the 55 years Gold Gloves have been handed out, a Phillies third baseman has won 15 times.
